Although it is winter and it is all too tempting to stay indoors and hibernate, you should get out daily for a walk. Walking is something that in the winter months we should be doing more of in fact than in the summer even as it has a lot of benefits to our bodies as well as our minds.

So, get wrapped up warm – Aran sweaters, warm coats and walking boots are all essential at this time of the year – and head outdoors.

One of the reasons that walking is so good is that it can reduce your risk of heart disease which is one of the biggest causes of death in the UK. A brisk walk can cut your risk of developing conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and of course things such as strokes and heart attacks too.

It is also great for keeping fit and making sure that you are not overweight. When you walk briskly you can burn a lot of calories, and by maintaining a healthy weight you are also at lower risk of developing health conditions such as diabetes.

It is also great for mental health – particularly during the winter months when we can suffer from the post-Christmas blues and the dark days have a negative impact on our mental wellbeing, getting out and about for a walk is a great way to bring some calm and peace to our minds, as well as the fact that spending time around nature is a really good thing particularly if you have mental health struggles.
