When you have been busy, working and providing for your family for most of your adult life and it’s now time for you to retire and live off the Old Age Pension provided by the government, you may well struggle and find it hard to adapt!  Having so much more time on your hands but considerably less money to spend could be a financial strain as well as an emotional one. Not having the daily routine of getting up, showered, dressed, eating breakfast, sorting out any pets and completing any housework before you leave for work can be life changing and many individuals really struggle with having no structure and daily purpose.  Helping out with family and taking care of grandchildren could be one way of keeping busy if you are lucky enough to have your grown-up children living nearby.  Another way of staying active is to volunteer at a charity outlet, homeless shelter or local school.

There are many local clubs and organisations that you could become involved with, if you have a favourite hobby then why not join the local club near to where you live and meet other similar minded people who go along to enjoy their hobbies.  You could always learn new skills and chat to other individuals, while enjoying your woodwork, candle making, writing, cooking or sewing.  If you have always had a passion for knitting or crochet you could spend some time with others, making blankets for a local nursery, Care Home or hospital.  Using complete, Crochet Blanket Kits purchased from a professional company such as Wool Couture you could put your natural skills to work helping others less fortunate than yourself.

You could enrol at a community college, the old adage “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” isn’t true and you are never too old to learn a new skill.  So, if there’s something you have always wanted to learn then retirement could be the perfect time to start.  Maybe you have always wanted to learn more about car mechanics, hairdressing, beauty therapy, working with children, writing, painting or caring for sick animals, then now is the time to do it. Keeping busy, learning new skills and helping others are all ways you can enjoy your retirement and never be bored again!
