The weather is getting better at last, and we can look forward to enjoying spending more time outdoors – having barbeques, going to the beach, and going for picnics are just a few of the activities that we all look forward to doing over the summer.

Something else that we can do in the summer months, is look forward to not using our central heating. The warmer weather can save us lots of money on our heating bills, which, especially at the moment, is something we all want to do as much as possible with the cost of heating going up.

In the summer, switching the boiler off can save you money, as this way the pilot light won’t be on constantly burning fuel. This is the case with older boilers especially. Of course, you do need to think about how you will get hot water – fine if you have an electric shower, but of course the water from the taps will still not come out hot, so you will need to boil the water in a kettle or on the hob.

If your boiler is a more modern combi, it will most likely have an option to switch it to hot water only, so you can turn the heating off. If you want to have the heating on in some rooms of the house, you could just turn off the radiators in the rooms that you do not want to heat and put the heating onto a timer for when you want to have it on.

Something to be aware of when you are doing this is the fact that if your boiler is off for a long period of time, this may cause problems internally. Ideally, you should turn the boiler back on for a short time on a weekly basis, just to make sure that it is working normally. This also prevents parts in the boiler, such as valves, from seizing up due to lack of use.

The summer is a great time to give your boiler a health check.
