Royal hunting forests
Somerset offers beautiful walking routes in what used to be royal forests, historically kept for hunting by kings only. These include Exmoor, North Petherton, Mendip and Kingswood.
England’s coastal path
A 58-mile stretch of coastal path between Brean Down and Minehead passes through some stunning beaches. This forms part of the England Coast Path, which has a completion date planned for 2020.
The Quantock hills are partially volcanic, giving the region its own special scenery. You can walk along the tracks of Great Wood forest from Seven Wells car park to view the variety of plants and birdlife.
Visit a mump
The word ‘mump’ is commonly added to a place name to indicate that it is on a hilltop with good all-round views. Such sites were valued historically as either defence lookouts or church sites. The monument of Burrow Mump is situated in Burrowbridge village and is topped by a grade II listed church.
The highest sea cliffs in England
Exmoor boasts the highest cliffs in England and Wales, which can be enjoyed during recreational pursuits such as sailing and kayaking; alternatively, you can jump off them guided by a local qualified instructor.
Canal space walk
You can start the Somerset Space Walk at Maunsel Lock on the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. This set of sculptures of the solar system are proportional in dimension and distance to give visitors an insight into the vast size of space.
Off-road cycling
Exmoor and the Quantock hills offer fantastic mountain bike trails interspersed with pubs and tea rooms.
Climbing and caving
Somerset is home to the largest cave labyrinth in the UK – Cheddar and Wookey Hole. Rock climbing is also popular; however, membership of the British Mountaineering Council is a must.
Somerset CCC
While in Taunton, take time to visit the well-known Somerset Country Cricket Club and enjoy a break in Stragglers Coffee House.
Legendary location of Camelot
Cadbury Castle is thought to be the site of King Arthur’s Camelot and is well worth a visit.
